Ethiopian Muslims rocked Addis Ababa

The Horn Times Newsletter 8 February 2013

*40 million Orthodox Christians must join the revolution

“We are Kamil Shemsu, We are Yasin Nuru, and we are Ahmed Mustafa… Allah Waa Akbar!”
“Release our venerated leaders now, Allah Waa Akbar!”
“Let our voices be heard…”
Ethiopian Muslims rocked Addis Ababa
As time runs out to correct the wrongs of the dead tyrant Meles Zenawi, Ethiopia’s crumbling minority junta is fast losing credibility and legitimacy.
Today’s(8 February 2013) ground breaking Muslim protest and the voices they reverberated throughout the vast nation are the authentic voices of all Ethiopians, according to Jemmal Yassin, a 21 year old Unity college student.

“As you see this is not savage rioting to destroy property and innocent lives. We are not here to destabilize our country’s political life and social balance by blindly demanding the implementation of the Sharia law in a secular nation. All this is the junta’s shoddy propaganda war against Muslims to scare off 40 million orthodox Christians from joining us.” The articulate young devout told reporters at Anwar Mosque in central Addis Ababa.

Despite the massive intimidation campaign and threats of genocide by the minority junta the turnout was much bigger than previous protests, a clear sign of people getting fed up with TPLF warlords and an indication that the regime is losing its hold on people.

Similar protests were held in all major cities and towns of Ethiopia with miner clashes being reported in the eastern historic city of Harer.
Some Muslims said today’s angry protest is provoked by the airing of a Holy wood blockbuster styled sort of poorly written documentary titled Jihadawi Harekat on the TPLF owned ETV.

Besides linking the peaceful protesters to extremist groups like Al-shabab and Al-Qaida, the topsy-turvy documentary believed to have been authored by pathological anti-Islam warlord Bereket semon, accuses the incarcerated leaders of the revolution as instigators of militant violence.
However, in more than a year long peaceful demand for religious freedom, Ethiopian Muslims never sought armed confrontation as solution for the predicament their religion find itself in.

Would the man who is running the show after repeatedly vowing to crash the Muslim uprising, Deputy Prime Minister Debretsion Gebremikael use excessive force similar to the 2005 genocide against the people?

Will warlord Abbay Tsehaye’s blatant attempt to instill a fake pro TPLF patriarch prompt millions of Orthodox Church followers to join their Muslim brothers and sisters at Meskel square?

Only time will tale.

Charges renewed against Ethiopian journalist Temesghen Desalegn

charges against Ethiopian journalist Temesghen Desalegn
Nairobi, February 8, 2013–The Committee to Protect Journalists condemns the revival of criminal charges against Ethiopian journalist Temesghen Desalegn today in what appears to be a politicized court hearing designed to censor one of the few critical voices left in the country.

A judge in the Federal High Court in the capital, Addis Ababa, revived three charges against Temesghen, former chief editor of the now-defunct Feteh, and one against the general manager of Mastewal Publishing, the publishing company that formerly printed Feteh, according to local journalists who attended the hearing. Temesghen faces charges of “outrages against the constitution,” defaming the government, and false publication of articles, while the manager of Mastewal Publishing faces an unspecified charge for allowing the weekly to be published. Under Ethiopian law, a printing company is also held accountable for a press offense by a publication that it publishes.Read more from the link:- http://ecadforum.com/2013/02/08/charges-renewed-against-ethiopian-journalist-temesghen-desalegn/

The Case Against Trial By Public Media

by Alemayehu Fentaw Weldemariam
eurasia review

An authoritarian regime is bad, no matter what its ideological dressing may be.

The Case Against Trial By Public MediaTerrorism is also bad, whether it is
Islamic, secular, or so-called state terrorism. While this may be a truism, the EPRDF would argue that neither could nor should be forced on it.

Yesterday, ETV aired on prime time television a documentary prepared by the Information Network Security Agency (INSA) and the Federal Police Anti-Terror Joint Task-Force titled “Jihadawi Harekat” and subtitled “Boko Haram in Ethiopia”, despite an injunction issued by the Federal High Court prohibiting the dissemination of the film. The broadcast took place while the trials of 29 peaceful Muslim protesters, who are accused of terrorism, are pending.

The footage features few facts supported by evidence, except for the confessions of the accused, which, according to their defense attorney, were compelled by force. The central problem with the broadcast is that the defendants, already disadvantaged by coerced confessions, will now face the added hazard of prejudiced public opinion.

It is plainly evident that the defendants will not have a fair trial and that adverse publicity has gutted the principle of the presumption of innocence of the accused. This raises the additional grave concern – the right to a fair trial with presumption of innocence does not exist in Ethiopia! This is a classic hallmark of an authoritarian regime. Ethiopia: Jihadawi Harekat: Context, Objectives, and Internal Contradictions

Posted On : February 7th, 2013 | Updated On : February 7th, 2013

By Faysal Qassim

“Authoritarian leaders do repeat their tactics, once as tragedy, second as farce,” a modified version of Marx’s assertion in his article The Eighteenth Brumaire.
On February 5, the regime in Ethiopia released a documentary film entitled “Jihadawi Harakat”, which was wrongly put as “Jihadic Wars”(haraka is movement in Arabic). The documentary is not very different from the long list of multiple propaganda wars the ruling party has been running for several years. In fact, this film is a bit unlucky to have come after so many of its predecessors which were already dissected and eviscerated by many an observer. I think if at all some of its predecessors were a tragedy in some ways, I think this specific documentary will surely be regarded by too many people as a farce.

Before I move on to the analysis of some aspects of the documentary, I would like to mention some points about this paper. This paper is not a full-fledged work of academics but a collection of some personal reflections on the documentary film, Jihadawi Harekat (hereafter JH). It is not, further, a work of media critique, but a simple set of political analysis about the context of the film and some thematic insights thereof. Finally, although a plenty of sober evidences can be brought up to effectively falsify the many claims of JH, I chose not to in this paper. I will instead just confine myself to showing some of (not all) the internal problems of the documentary vis-à-vis its objectives, without mentioning any external evidence.

Jihadawi Harekat is a second-rate purportedly horror documentary about the growing threat of Islamism in some parts of Africa. It supposedly shows the rise of Islamic fundamentalism, militancy, and terrorism in the wider African continent, with particular emphasis on East Africa. Obviously, the major spotlight is Ethiopia, which is claimed to have become a hotbed of such threats since recent times. The “Islamist crucible”, it is tried to show, has particularly targeted the historic inter-religious co-existence, the intra-religious unity and the development strides of the country.

The “Islamist crucible” is the major message wanted to be sent out. There is nothing new about this fear-mongering. It has been around for more than a year now, at least ever since the current civil rights movement erupted at Awoliya. This special documentary simply forms part of, but a conspicuous part thereof, the long-running alarm sounds going off from the side of the ruling party. And just like the many previous films of its kind (think of Akeldama as an example), it has many long-term and immediate political reasons behind it. It should just be seen like any propaganda work, something any government might be in need of, especially if it is authoritarian. በህወሐት(TPLF) ከአዜብ ደጋፊና ከስበሀት ነጋ ደጋፊ የትኛው አሸናፊ ይሆናል?

This group knows how Ethiopia sees them. They know they can’t win individual fights. They will remain loyal to each other, and face any enemy together. To stay in power, they will apply the Meles Zenawi method of operation: swift and merciless
The dynamo in this old-guard group is undoubtedly Sebhat Nega. He is the master of intrigue, and unlike the others, he has the gut to stand his ground. His enemy number one is the widowed Azeb Mesfin, and the whole power struggle revolves around the two of them.

BACKGROUND – The first major conflict within the TPLF leadership occurred in 2001 after the late Prime Minister Meles Zenawi aborted an imminent Ethiopian military victory over the 1998-2000 War with Eritrea.

The victory was so imminent as Eritrean soldiers were already fleeing to Sudan, handing over their guns and ammunition to Sudanese security forces. In the capital Asmara, which was crowded with fleeing residents of towns already overran by Ethiopian defense forces, government officials were on the verge of fleeing the country along with their families. President Isaias himself was considering to move back to Sahel, his rebel-era base in the desert region of northeastern Eritrea.
For Meles, undoubtedly the architect of Eritrean independence, it would have been the most painful episode to see Ethiopian-flag carrying soldiers marching in victory into the Eritrean capital. It would have negated Eritrean claim, which Meles bragged about time and again, that their 30-year-old war had resulted in the defeat of Ethiopia and the independence of Eritrea.

The conflict arose between two groups: those who favored Ethiopian victory over Eritrea and those who favored Eritrean victory over Ethiopia. To cut a long story short, Meles took swift measures against his half-hearted rivals and destroyed them in every sense of the word.

Prominent TPLF officials like Kinfe Gebremedhin and Hailu Gebremeskel were murdered in politically-motivated plots while Gebru Asrat et al were almost deprived of their citizenship rights and thrown penniless onto the streets while former Defense Minister Seeye Abraha was thrown into jail for six years on trumped-up charges of corruption.

With the Tigrian wing of TPLF destroyed, there was no such organization called TPLF in the real sense of the word. Since 2001, therefore, Meles had emerged as the undisputed boss of “TPLF”, and the ruthless ruler of Ethiopia. His loyalists like Sebhat Nega and Bereket Simon assumed tremendous power as their conviction to defend Eritrean independence was no less than Meles Zenawi’s zeal for his motherland.
The conflict is purely about power, fame and fortune

Unlike the 2001 conflict between Meles and the dissidents that he later wiped out of the political scene of the country, the current conflict is not about the national interests of Ethiopia nor about democracy or human rights. Both the Azeb group and the Sebhat Nega group have more in common in defending Eritrean interests than Ethiopia’s. In other words, the budding conflict is purely about power, fame and fortune.

Azeb Mesfin – She is undoubtedly the “Queen Bee” of the EPRDF colony. Azeb counted on the unsurpassed power of her late husband, Meles Zenawi, and became the most feared and commanding lady over time. Her notoriety reached newer heights when she disgraced veteran TPLF leader Sebhat Nega by removing him unceremoniously from party membership and CEO of EFFORT, the latter being a multi-billion-dollar business conglomerate that Azeb owns today.

Sebhat Nega, as the former TPLF chairman largely seen as the God Father of Meles Zenawi, was humiliated at an EPRDF congress when Azeb poured all nasty words on him, and led to his dismissal. Sebhat, who considers TPLF as his own real estate, should have been waiting for a payback time to punish Azeb, and what a better chance than witnessing the untimely death of Meles Zenawi.

In post-Meles Ethiopia, Sebaht Nega openly blamed Meles for “killing TPLF,” and began to talk to former TPLF officials privately that they need to regroup and restore their lost power, fame and fortune. Meles had purged many veteran TPLF leaders in 2001, and Sebhat was now trying to give them a new lease on life. How much has he succeeded is to be seen, but the current conflict among TPLF/EPRDF officials credits Sebhat Nega as the originator.

While Azeb has the support of all those Meles confidantes like Bereket Simon and Gen. Samora Yonus, restless Sebhat Nega claims to have the support of aging TPLFites Seyoum Mesfin, Abay Tsehaye and others along the TPLF rank and file. Many doubt if Sebhat would garner support adequate enough to raise eye-brows among the higher echelon of power.

Abay Woldu – A crocodile of a Man

If Abay Tsehaye, Seyoum Mesfin etc. are written off as cowards who would always desert their camp and join the winners club, Abai Woldu has opened a third front of power struggle. To put things in perspective, the power rivalry is among three groups: Azeb Mesfin/Bereket Simon vs Abai Woldu vs Sebhat Nega.
(To be continued) ………………..HEY GUYS YOU CAN SAY SOME THING ABOUT IT…..

They Shall Inherit the Wind
by Alemayehu G. Mariam
The Sandcastles and Dams of African Dictators

All dictators on the African continent have sought immortality by leaving a legacy that will outlive them and endure for the ages. But all have inherited the wind.
Kwame Nkrumah led the first sub-Saharan African country to gain independence from colonialism in 1957. Nkrumaism sought to transform Ghana into a modern socialist state through state-driven industrialization. He built the Akosombo Dam on the Volta River, at the time considered the “largest single investment in the economic development plans of Ghana”. He promoted the cult of personality and was hailed as the “Messiah”, “Father of Ghana and Pan Africanism” and “Father of African nationalism”. He crushed the unions and the opposition, jailed the judges, created a one-man, one-party state and tried to make himself “President for life”. He got the military boot in 1966. He left a bitter legacy of one-man, one-party rule which to this day serves as a model of dictatorship for all of Africa. Nkrumah died in exile and inherited the wind.

Gamal Abdel Nasser sought to create his own brand of Arab socialism and nationalism and propagated it as a secular Pan-Arab ideology. Using an extensive intelligence apparatus and an elaborate propaganda machine, he promoted a cult of personality projecting himself as the “Man of the People.” He built the Aswan High Dam with Soviet aid. He ruled Egypt in a one-man, one-party dictatorship and crushed all dissent, particularly the Muslim Brotherhood. Today the Muslim Brotherhood is in power and Nasserism is in the dustbin of history. Nasser left a legacy of military dictatorship in Egypt and inherited the wind. Please read more this interesting and a short briefing of African dictators by clicking here

Indian companies involved in Ethiopia land grab: activists

I call this daylight robbery, Obang Metho said

Indian investors eying Ethiopia should ensure that the local population is consulted before they are displaced for projects that involve the transfer of vast tracts of land, activists on Tuesday said, citing what they alleged were multiple instances of land grab in the east African country.

The Ethiopian government had committed “egregious violations of human rights” in leasing over 600,000 hectares of land to Indian companies, Anuradha Mittal of the US-based Oakland Institute said in New Delhi on Tuesday – charges that country’s government has consistently denied.

Speaking to reporters in New Delhi, Obang Metho, the exiled head of the Solidarity Movement for a New Ethiopia (SMNE) said the India must choose whether to support globally established human rights, as the world’s largest democracy. “I call this daylight robbery,” Metho said. Merits of the recent mutiny in Eritrea. By Robele Ababya

By Robele Ababya,
ERT Pic34This writing is prompted by: (i) the recent Mutiny in Eritrea in so far as its merits of orderly change of regime in Eritrea and the ensuing better relations with Ethiopia are concerned; and (ii) the warming of interpersonal and community relations between Ethiopians and Eritreans that I have been witnessing in the Diaspora.
Genuine cooperation is evolving as demonstrated by: worship at churches or mosques; funerals; rendering assistance in times of emergencies; interaction in social functions such as weddings; and commercial partnership. Names like “Abyssinian” or “Ethiopian –Eritrean” are seen written on business sign posts at bars, restaurants and accommodations. In a larger sense in my view, the motto “Africa for Africans first” is in motion heralding exemplary cooperation.

Dawn of harmonious relation between Ethiopia and Eretria

I was blessed to witness firsthand the emerging friendship between the Ethiopian and Eritrean youths in more than one instance to my utter delight as briefly written below:-
1a.       Hana Metasebia, a beautiful young Eritrean girl clad with her Eritrean flag, joined the mammoth Ethiopian fans during the AFCON match in RSA in support of the Ethiopian team playing against Zambia. The crowd pleasantly welcomed her gut to cross the political ’border’. I watched this on the television and got the following picture from Photos ETNTC.  At this time of writing I learnt that several Eritreans were fans of the Ethiopian team. What the young lady did is a reflection of political maturity and realization that the Ethiopian and Eritrean people are bound by blood, culture and long history.
1b.       I was deeply touched by the courage and the profound power of the message that the beautiful Hana in the picture above carried to the equally beautiful and enthusiastic Ethiopian fans. I thought she was saying that she loves her flag as much as she cherishes the unbreakable historical ties between the Ethiopian and the Eritrean people. Note: The script in Amharic in the picture above translates into English almost as: “How Pleasant! Having ignored the political boundary the Eritrean came to support the Walya team.”
1c.       The picture provides an unmistakable hint for pundits engaged in finding durable solution to the present draconian social, economic and political problems created by despotic rulers Isaias Afeworki and the late Meles Zenawi.  The youths on both  sides are telling to us the older generation that they sleep in separate tents but with their hearts together with common aspirations carried on the on the same wave length!
1d.       The young lady is in my opinion a revolutionary leader who had seized the moment to light the torch for change in Ethiopia-Eritrea relation. She has evidently understood that the special relationship between Ethiopia and Eritrea will stay even after the United States of Africa has become a reality. Please read the whole article from the link http://www.andinetusa.org/archives/16769

Mulugeta Kahsay: Another TPLF terrorist exposed

Monday, February 4, 2013 @ 03:02 AM ed

By Abebe Gellaw
In his book “Death Threats and Violence: New Research and Clinical Perspectives” (2008), violence expert Dr. Stephen J. Morewitz tries to unravel the relationships between death threats, violence and the extremists who employ violence to terrorize others. According to Morewitz, “There are many definitions of terrorism, but they all pretty much agree that it is a political tactic that involves the use of threats of violence, such as death threats or actual violence, often against civilians, to frighten members of the public or target group into accepting certain political demands.”

There is only one reason why we find the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) in the annals of the Global Terrorism Database (GTD), which is a project of the U.S. Homeland Security housed at the University of Maryland. It is only because TPLF is a violent terrorist organization, much like Ku Klux Klan (KKK), that became the core of the government misruling Ethiopia since 1991.
While most of the terrorist activities of the TPLF listed in the database include the pre-1991 phase of TPLF’s terrorism, TPLF’s crimes and terrorism after it has taken over power are the staple of the Ethiopian media and the daily concerns of ordinary citizens that are constantly subjected to killings, torture, physical and psychological abuse, beatings, death threats, as well as forced disappearance and exile.

Since May 18, 2012, a day I openly and defiantly condemned Meles Zenawi and shouted out the muffled cries of Ethiopians for freedom, I have received hundreds of death threats from TPLF agents and operatives. Some have even exploited the power of Facebook and Twitter to call for my head on a platter. “Kill him wherever you find him,” says one Facebook poster bearing my picture under cross hairs. It has been liked and tagged by hundreds of fanatic TPLF supporters making such a criminal incitement go around the world with impunity. Over 55 have endorsed the Facebook poster making a similar call and comment. The most disturbing part of this episode is that many of those who are plotting, conniving and calling for my death or violate my civil rights live in the United States and Europe under different guises.

Mulugeta Kahsay has lived in London, United Kingdom, for many years. A well-known TPLF operative in South London, Mulugeta appears to be so committed to the cause of the TPLF that he repeatedly vowed to kill me, my family and burn down my properties in Ethiopia, though I do not own any. Using anonymity as a cover, he left five voice messages for me between September 11, 2012 and January 11, 2012. The first one condemned me for exercising my First Amendment rights when I protested against the late dictator Meles Zenawi at the G8 food security gathering in Washington DC last May.

While all the messages came from cell phone (+44 7956567005), the last two death threats he made on January 11, 2013 are the most disturbing and chilling because they also target my family and loved ones that have nothing to do with my political views, activism or journalism. A thorough investigation and forensic analysis conducted to establish the caller led conclusively to none other than Mulugeta Kahsay, who drives cab part-time and spends most of his time in the service of the TPLF.

“This message is for Gellaw Abebe or Abebe Gellaw. This is just to let you know that we’re gonna suck your mother fucker blood. Again we have found out that you have a house in Addis. We’re gonna burn it down and we’re gonna kill you ; your family and yourself. We make sure that we finish you for what you did. You deserve dead (sic) penalty. So we’re not letting you go, (inaudible) believe me. Regardless how long it’s gonna take. You, your family, people that know you. We’re gonna to track them down one by one and we gonna to put their blood on the ground. We just find out that you got a couple of houses in Addis. They will be burnt soon,” the threatening message said.
Another message from Mulugeta Kahsay has a similar tone and again targets my family. “This message is for Abebe Gellaw. Abebe Gellaw this is the beginning. It’s not gonna be the end. We are following every step you do [do]. You and your family; we are going to crack you down. We are going to finish you one day. Regardless how long it’s gonna take to see your blood on the road. You or either your family, one of you has to go regardless how long it gonna take,” the threat says.
In a separate message left for me via ESAT radio listeners’ voicemail, Mulugeta repeats his outrage over my protest against the late tyrant. He used a racist expletive (donkey) frequently used by the TPLF to insult non-TPLF Ethiopians.

Under English law, like most jurisdictions, making death threats is a serious criminal offense. Let alone adults with their own families, a 10-year old boy captured headlines last year for being arrested for making death threats. The law is harsh against those who intend to cause fear and terror against innocent civilians. My wife and six year old boy hold British citizenship. Any threats against them also concern the British judicial system as citizens that are protected by law.
Terrorists terrorize others to impose their will and imagined power upon others, especially those who are openly hostile or opposed to the ideologies and activities of their groups. Terrorism takes different forms but it is main objective is making people feel vulnerable, insecure, terrified and terrorized. The impact of terrorists attacks, whatever their forms, cause physical and psychological harm.

Mulugeta has deliberately tried to cause fear and terror against me and my family that have no connection whatsoever with my journalism and activism. But Mulugeta and others who are wasting their time making similar plot and death threats must know that nothing will deter or distract me from struggling for the freedom of the people of Ethiopia. I am not against anyone, but against tyranny and injustice. Ethiopia will be free from criminal tyrants in power that have imposed Apartheid on the people of Ethiopia. Fighting for freedom is my calling. Nothing will stop me and Ethiopians from reclaiming our God-given liberties.
