It
is to be recalled that very few private and Diaspora based media have
been reporting the forceful eviction of Ethiopians of the Amhara ethnic
origin from Benishangul Gumz Region, while most media especially State
owned have been silent about it.
In
an interview with a Diaspora based pro-regime online Chat room,
EthioCivilty, the President of the Benishangul Gumz Region, Ahmed
Nasir officially admitted that thousands of Amharas have been evicted
from his Region and were deported back. He said from one specific Woreda alone 1700 people have been evicted.
"They
settled in our Region by clearing the forests illegally few years ago
and now we've decided that they should go back to where they came from."
Nasir said.
The
President added that his Region will meet the officials of the Amhara
Region to discuss "if there were any gaps in the process". He said there
was no accident and destruction on human life so far but some groups
with "vested interest" are blowing the issue.
